The Missouri Department of Natural Resources' goal is to make the permitting process as timely, protective and cost effective as possible.

Listed below are different types of businesses and a general description of that business. Select the business name to find a list of permits that type of business may need to obtain from the Department of Natural Resources. Depending on the complexity of the business operations, the permitting process may be rather extensive and require more than one permit.

Fish Hatchery A facility used to artificially breed, hatch and rear through the early life stages of fish.
Food and Kindred Products A facility used to manufacture or process foods or beverages for human consumption, and certain related products, such as manufactured ice, chewing gum, vegetable and animal fats and oils, and prepared feeds for animals and fowls.
Food Waste A business that collects discarded food, food-soiled paper and other organic waste from commercial or industrial businesses to process at a composting facility.
Forest and Park Service A municipality or business that operates and manages a park or forest area in a community. This also includes a business that is primarily engaged in performing services related to timber production, wood technology, forestry economics and marketing as well as other forestry services.
Foundry A specialized manufacturing company that produces metal castings. The metal is cast into shapes by melting them into liquid, pouring the metal into a mold and removing the mold material after the metal has solidified as it cools. The most common metals processed are aluminum and cast iron. Foundries are one of the largest manufactures to help in the recycling industry by melting and recasting millions of tons of scrap metal every year to create new durable products. 
Furniture and Fixtures A business primarily engaged in manufacturing furniture and fixtures, including but not limited to hospital beds and furniture specially designed for use in restaurants, bars, cafeterias, public buildings and office space as well as household items. 
Gasoline Station An establishment that provides the retail sale, dispensing and storage of petroleum products and other fuels, energy charging stations, lubricating oils and products related to the operation of a motor vehicle, marine vessel or aircraft fuel tanks from storage tanks.
Glass, Clay, Cement, Concrete and Gypsum Products A business that manufactures flat glass and other glass products, cement, structural clay products, pottery, concrete and gypsum products, cut stone, abrasive and asbestos products and other products from materials taken principally from the earth in the form of stone, clay and sand.
Golf Course A commercially operated facility, whether publicly or privately owned, that offers golfing facilities to the general public for a fee. A regulation size golf course allows golfers to play on a 9 or 18-hole game.
Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage or Disposal Facility A business or facility used to collect, store, process, treat or recycle hazardous waste. Additional descriptions regarding these types of facilities include the following.Operating facilities that actively treat, store (for more than 90 days) or dispose hazardous wasteFacilities that stopped managing hazardous waste and are closing those operationsFacilities where closure activities are complete in a specific area of the property, but oversight is needed for monitoring and maintenance activities (post-closure activities) in areas where hazardous waste remained in place after closure, such as hazardous waste landfills or surface impoundmentsFacilities where investigation or cleanup activities (corrective action) are being performed for hazardous waste releases resulting from present or past hazardous waste handling practicesFacilities where investigation and cleanup activities are complete, but oversight is needed to make sure any required activity or use limitations placed on the property are followed (long-term stewardship)
Heat Pumps A business that installs heat pumps to take heat from the air or ground around a building and increases it to a temperature that keeps our homes and businesses warm inside.
Hospital Any public or private facility used to treat short and long-term health care needs including in-patient and out-patient surgeries as well as rehabilitation therapy.
Hotel/ Motel A commercial establishment that offers rooms for rent that contain a bed, shower and toilet facilities to the general public for nightly rent on a short-term basis. 
Hydrogeologic Consultant A business that provides specialized consultant and groundwater services for mining, civil, agriculture, water supply and wastewater management under the direction of a hydrogeologists or geochemists.
Incinerator A business that operates an incinerator is used to burn waste material, especially industrial waste, at high temperatures. Incineration converts the waste into ash, flue gas and heat used to generate electricity. 
Infectious Waste Haulers A person that transports a small subset of medical or healthcare waste. This waste is capable of producing an infectious disease because it contains strong and numerous enough pathogens that someone who comes in contact with it could get an infectious disease from it. Infectious waste is found in healthcare facilities, such as hospitals, doctor’s offices, dental offices, research laboratories and veterinary clinics. Infectious waste is also found in non-medical settings, such as schools, hotels, motels, tattoo shops and manufacturing businesses. It can also be found in our own homes.

Laboratory A facility that provides controlled conditions to conduct scientific tests, technological research, experiments and measurements.
Land Development/ Subdivision A business that develops or changes the appearance or evaluation of land through various practices using planning, engineering and construction to make improvements and resale the property. A subdivision development project is a process of legally dividing or splitting up the land into multiple plots to develop, sell or even transfer. 
Land Transportation and Warehouse A business used to transport or move people, animals or goods from one location to another location on land. A warehouse is a storage facility used to process and move goods on to wholesalers, retailers or consumers.
Landfill, Land Application Site and Open Dump A business that plans to use an area to dispose solid waste from more than one residence or from any commercial, industrial, manufacturing, recreational or governmental operation. There are several different types of landfills including sanitary, demolition and utility waste. This also includes a business that plans to land apply liquid waste or treated liquid waste on the soil surface or incorporating it into the soil.
Landscaping A business that will change the natural features of a piece of property by adding lawns, trees, shrubs, ornamental plantings, fencing, sidewalks or other structures and materials used in modern landscape architecture. A landscaping business can also sell supplies to improve properties such as soil, gravel, potting mix, mulch, sand, railway ties, blocks and other items.
Leather Tanning and Finishing A business responsible for processing and treating raw hides of animals to manufacture clothing, shoes or other products that have been transformed into leather.
Lubricant Manufacturing A business that produces petroleum-based lubricant and grease products, such as blended motor oils, brake fluids, transmission fluids and lubricating machinery grease. The business stores base oil and additives that are mixed well through a heat process to produce the lubricant. The product is then stored and shipped to market. 
Machine Shop A machine shop is a room, building or company where machinists use machine tools and cutting tools to make parts.
Medical Marijuana A medical marijuana facility in Missouri must be licensed and certified by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The facility provides safe and secure access to medical marijuana for qualifying Missouri patients through consistent regulation, enforcement and education. Medical/ Infectious Waste This type of business handles the proper disposal of medical and infectious waste materials generated from health care facilities such as hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, dental practices, blood banks and veterinary hospitals/ clinics as well as medical research facilities and laboratories.
Metal Mining A business that plans to extract ores (metal-bearing rock) from underground mines and surface mines using machinery, explosives and chemicals. Extraction processes include dressing (picking, sorting, washing of ores), milling (crushing, grinding, etc.) and beneficiation (processing to improve purity/quality).
Military Base This type of facility is owned and operated by or for the military or one of its branches of government to shelter military equipment, personnel, training facilities and operations.
