The Missouri Department of Natural Resources' goal is to make the permitting process as timely, protective and cost effective as possible.

Rubber Miscellaneous Plastic Products and Miscellaneous Manufacturing A business that manufactures products and materials from plastic resins and from natural, synthetic or reclaimed rubber.
Salvage Yard A business located on a non-residential property used to store, collect, sell or recycle vehicles, appliances and related machinery.
Sand and Gravel Operation In-stream sand and gravel mining is one of the most prevalent types of mining in Missouri. Businesses and individuals are not allowed to use excavating machinery within the flowing water of a stream. This type of activity is only allowed within the ordinary high banks of a stream, above the water line during the time of extraction. 
Sawmill A facility used to cut logs into lumber products.
School An institution where academic or technical instructions are given to students. Also included are establishments proving educational services such as libraries, student exchange programs and curriculum development. 
Scrap Recycling and Waste Recycling Facility A facility that recovers and processes recyclable metal materials from end-of-life products and structures so they can be reintroduced as raw materials and produced into new goods. 
Scrap Tire Collection Center A site where scrap tires are collected before being offered for recycling or processing and where fewer than 500 scrap tires are kept onsite at any time. A scrap tire is a tire that is no longer suitable for its original intended purpose because of wear, damage or defect. The center is only for temporary storage of scrap tires to be removed for recovery or processing or for temporary storage at a permitted scrap tire processing facility or for permanent disposal at a permitted solid waste disposal area.The department does not issue permits or registration for this type of facility. However, there are exemptions and record keeping requirements. Scrap Tire Processing Facility A facility used to collect and store discarded scrap tires for processing by shredding or other approved methods. The tires may be used for recycling or energy recovery.
Septage Hauler A septage hauler may require registration with the department. Septage includes sewage or human excreta that is removed from septic tanks or other onsite wastewater treatment facilities. These regulations help protect public health and safety by ensuring these types of waste are managed and disposed of properly.
Ship and Boat Building and Repair Yard Ship or boat building and repair includes the manufacture, repair and maintenance of ships or boats. Several types of hazards are common in this industry, including chemical such as asbestos, welding fumes, solvents, paints and fuels.
Slaughterhouse A facility used to butcher and process animals for human consumption.
Soil Remediation Plant A facility that uses a combination of processes to remove harmful contaminants from soil.
Solid Waste Hauler A business that collects or transports any solid waste, garbage, refuse or other waste materials for proper disposal or recycling.
Spray Painting Booth An automotive spray painting business includes a booth that is enclosed or semi-enclosed area used for to spray paint fabricated items. It may be equipped with a source of filtered air to keep the atmosphere dust-free, a waterfall backdrop to trap overspray and an exhaust system to vent the fumes of the evaporating solvents. 
Steam Electric Generating Facility A business that plans to use nuclear or fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas to heat water in boilers to generate steam for electricity.
Textile Mills, Apparel and Other Fabric Products Establishments that primarily engage in manufacturing textile goods, not elsewhere classified, including linen, jute and felt goods, padding and upholstery filling and processed waste and recovered fibers and flock. 
Timber Products A business that uses any wood produce including finished lumber, rough cut lumber, cants, logs, wood chips, sawdust and wood waste to create new products for sale.
Transfer Station A building used to collect and store recyclables and waste in preparation for processing or taken to a landfill.
Transportation Equipment, Industrial or Commercial Machinery A business that manufactures or sells equipment for transporting people and goods. Establishments in this subsector are primarily engaged in manufacturing machinery, equipment and parts. They use production processes similar to those of other machinery manufacturing establishments – bending, forming, welding, machining and assembling metal or plastic parts into components and finished products. Industrial machinery and equipment may also include water and air pollution control equipment and solid waste disposal facilities. 
Treatment Works This type of facility is usually publically owned and uses devices and systems to store, treat, recycle and reclaim municipal sewage or industrial liquid wastes.
Truck/ Car Wash An area or structure equipped with facilities for washing and vacuuming automobiles.
Wastewater Treatment Plant This type of facility completes a series of treatment processes to remove contaminants and pollutants from domestic, business and industrial wastewater. The wastewater is treated or stabilized using a series of physical, chemical or biological process before it is properly disposed of and returned into Missouri’s streams, lakes or rivers. 
Water Company/ Utility A governmental unit, municipal or private corporation, association, partnership or individual engaged in furnishing water to the public for household or drinking purposes.
Water Transportation Facility A business establishment engaged in freight and passenger transportation on inland waters, and establishments furnishing such incidental services as loading, unloading or transportation of goods and towing operations. This business type also includes excursion boats, sight-seeing boats and water taxis. 
Well Driller Individuals must test and become licensed/ permitted in order to do business in Missouri to construct a water, heat pump or monitoring well. Permitted contractors also may plug abandoned wells. 
Woodworking Shop A business that uses the skill of shaping, sawing, grinding, smoothing and polishing wood into various pieces of wood products including furniture, cabinets and more.
Yard Waste/ Composting Facility A facility in the business of collecting, storing or processing organic materials, yard waste, food scraps, various compostable solid waste items, bulking agents or additives for composting.
