The Doe Run Company maintains the air monitoring station known as Big Creek #5. It lies south of a now-closed primary lead smelter in Glover, southeast Missouri. Doe Run has a second air monitoring station north of the old smelter's location. The public has access to neither station, so EPA does not classify them as ambient air monitoring stations and does not consider data from them when deciding whether the area meets the federal lead standard.
The primary lead smelter shut down in 2003; however, the area still experiences sporadic lead emissions from activities to deconstruct the primary smelter.
Pollutants
Lead
The primary and secondary ambient air standards for lead have remained at 0.15 micrograms per cubic meter since 2008. The primary standard reflects EPA's concern for public health while the second standard demonstrates concern for public welfare. EPA bases the standard on the highest rolling three-month average over a period of three years and two months. A monitoring site meets the standard when this rolling three-month average is less than or equal to 0.15 μg/m3.
