JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 16, 2026 - The Department of Natural Resources’ Missouri Geological Survey is releasing a new edition of its flagship publication “Geologic Wonders and Curiosities of Missouri.” The book is a compilation of the state’s most interesting natural sites, providing geological interpretation and guidance for visiting hundreds of publicly accessible locations across Missouri. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first publication, the new edition has also been updated and expanded to include additional sites not previously featured, plus several new chapters.
“Many of our state’s geologists were inspired to pursue a career in geology through reading “Geologic Wonders and Curiosities of Missouri,” so we are thrilled to introduce this publication to a new generation,” said State Geologist and Director of the Missouri Geological Survey Carey Bridges. “Long-time fans of the book can look forward to seeing updated entries for many of our state’s mountains, shut-ins and waterfalls. In this new edition, we also are adding several chapters covering topics like springs, caves, glades, mineral resources and even meteorite impact sites.”
An interagency team of technical experts worked to research, write and review the text for the book’s 50th anniversary edition over two years. The book contains hundreds of new photographs, many obtained by hiking, pedaling and paddling to remote locations. Special contributions including original content and technical review were further provided by Eric and Joanna Reuter, the pair of geologists behind the popular Ozark Outsider channel on YouTube.
The first edition of “Geologic Wonders and Curiosities of Missouri” was authored by former State Geologist Tom Beveridge and published in 1978. Its collection of more than 400 geologic sites was based on his own career, plus decades of combined experience from MGS geologists working in the field. The book was last released in 1990 with a second edition revised by then MGS Deputy Director Jerry Vineyard.
The hardcover 50th anniversary edition of “Geologic Wonders and Curiosities of Missouri” will be available to purchase for $50 per copy this November, while supplies last. Copies can be reserved for purchase by sending an email request to bethany.hawkins@dnr.mo.gov.
