City will make drinking water system improvements

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 29, 2025 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $4.28 million to the city of Anderson for upgrades to its drinking water distribution, storage and supply systems. The city anticipates that the funding will cover the entire cost of the project, which should be completed by November 2026.

In addition to an array of system upgrades, the project will include construction of a new 200,000-gallon elevated storage tank and drilling of a new municipal well.

Project funding will consist of a $2.5 million Drinking Water State Revolving Fund grant and a $1.78 million loan from the fund. The department estimates that its funding will save the city’s ratepayers $2.5 million in principal and approximately $780,000 in interest over the loan’s 20-year term.

“While we often take it for granted, adequate water and wastewater infrastructure is critical to the quality of life of every Missourian, as well as the sustainability of communities and industries throughout the state,” said Kurt Schaefer, director of the Department of Natural Resources.

The department’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund finances improvements to water treatment plants, distribution systems and water storage and supply facilities. The fund also finances system interconnection and consolidation projects. Communities that borrow from the fund benefit from the below-market interest rate and from assistance a project manager provides throughout the project.

The department is committed to assisting Missouri communities with water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects. Through its Financial Assistance Center, the department provides funding opportunities for qualified communities with water quality, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure needs. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
