The Farrar air monitoring station is located in southeast Missouri, upwind of the St. Louis area and downwind of cities in other states such as Paducah and Memphis. It is used to determine the exposure of a segment of the population to ozone and provide an indication of ozone entering Missouri from outside the state.

The primary National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone is 0.070 parts per million (ppm) averaged over eight hours (annual fourth-highest daily maximum 8-hour concentration, averaged over three years). The federal ozone monitoring season runs from March 1 to Oct. 31.
