The Liberty air monitoring station helps characterize exposure to ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter of a segment of the Kansas City metropolitan statistical area. In the past, the station has monitored other pollutants; for example, it monitored nitrogen dioxide from 1982 to 2010.

The primary National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone is 0.070 parts per million averaged over eight hours (annual fourth-highest daily maximum 8-hour concentration, averaged over three years). The federal ozone season for monitoring runs from March 1 to Oct. 31.
