The Farrar air monitoring station in southeast Missouri is located upwind of the St. Louis area and downwind of cities in other states such as Paducah and Memphis. It serves to determine the exposure of a segment of the population to ozone and to provide an indication of ozone entering Missouri from outside the state.

The primary National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone is 0.070 parts per million averaged over eight hours (annual fourth-highest daily maximum 8-hour concentration, averaged over three years). The federal ozone season for monitoring runs from March 1 to Oct. 31.
