MoDNR’s VW Trust team visited Capital Sand’s Marge I tugboat. Capital Sand replaced the vessel’s older diesel engines with new engines partially funded by cost-share from the VW Trust. The main goal of the VW Trust is to maximize Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emission reductions by replacing tugboat engines that operate regularly on the Missouri River with newer, more efficient engines to reduce diesel-related pollution. Marine vessel engines are very large and therefore replacement projects result in a substantial reduction of diesel emissions. Replacing and disabling the old engines is one of the largest NOx reducing projects in the state funded by the VW Trust. Capital Sand’s recently awarded project, Elizabeth Ann, will have an even greater lifetime NOx reduction of 204 tons.
