New energy sources will support U.S. energy dominance, reduce reliance on energy imports

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 7, 2025 – Today, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced the State of Missouri has been selected by the National Governor’s Association (NGA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to convene an in-state nuclear summit.

“It’s imperative for Missouri to develop new sources of reliable energy to serve our businesses, communities, and citizens,” said Governor Kehoe. “Missouri’s current nuclear fleet consists of a single reactor at the Callaway Energy Center, which generates 14% of in-state electricity. Expansions to Missouri’s nuclear capacity will make a meaningful contribution to the United States’ energy dominance, increase regional grid reliability, and provide a steady supply of alternative fuels that will empower private industry to meet their energy goals and reduce reliance on energy imports.”

NGA and DOE will provide technical assistance and assist the State of Missouri with strategic planning for its energy future. The summit will help create the necessary momentum critical to transforming existing conceptual plans for new nuclear deployment in Missouri into definitive and actional projects.

“We look forward to working with NGA and DOE to move both Missouri and the country forward in advancing nuclear energy,” said Kurt Schaefer, Director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The Governor's Office, along with the Department of Natural Resources, will serve as the designated co-leads for the in-state nuclear summit and its outcomes. The State of Missouri commits to collaborating with the following partners who have expressed interest and are positioned to facilitate Missouri’s nuclear objectives:

  • Missouri’s key investor-owned, private utility companies (Ameren Missouri, Evergy, and Liberty), that generate and sell electricity, with keen interest in providing reasonable cost energy to their customers:
  • University of Missouri System with two university nuclear reactors, one of which is the largest university reactor in the country, currently engaged in developing nuclear energy opportunities;
  • Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives representing 47 electric cooperatives across rural communities;
  • Missouri Public Utility Alliance representing public utilities throughout the state; and
  • City Utilities of Springfield.
