City will make wastewater treatment system improvements
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MAY 20, 2024 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $14.1 million in financial assistance to Jefferson City for upgrades to its wastewater treatment system. The assistance is expected to cover the project’s total cost and the improvements should be completed by September 2025.
The improvement project is expected to improve operations and maintenance of the city’s wastewater treatment system by replacing aging infrastructure. The funding consists of a $14.1 million low-interest loan, which is estimated to save customers approximately $4.6 million in interest over the loan’s 20-year term.
“Every community must have up-to-date infrastructure if they are to keep growing and thriving,” said Governor Mike Parson. “One of our priorities is helping Missouri communities like Jefferson City improve outdated water systems that serve our citizens every day.”
“Grants and low-interest loans through the State Revolving Fund help Missouri communities fund treatment system improvements they might not have been able to undertake otherwise,” said Dru Buntin, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. “Projects like this help protect public health and the environment, which improves the quality of life for Missourians.”
The Clean Water State Revolving Fund finances improvements to wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collection systems’ rehabilitation and extensions, and combined sewer overflow corrections. The fund also finances security, efficiency, and conservation measures. Communities that borrow from the fund benefit from the below-market interest rate and from assistance provided throughout their project by a department project manager.
The department is committed to assisting Missouri communities with water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects. Through its Financial Assistance Center, the department provides funding opportunities for qualified communities with water quality, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure needs. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
